Round 8 of the Hampshire Motocross Championships - Fobdown Farm - 18th July 2010

It's been a while since I raced although I did have a go at a 5hr Ironman Hare and Hounds a few weeks ago. I entered the event as a team with my brother Ben who has been racing enduros and H&H for a few seasons now riding his KTM300 smoker. The event was tough but we finished second team and I think we were 3rd or 4th overall. We could have won but I crashed mid race and snapped my clutch lever which cost us 5 minutes as I ran back to the pits to jump on Ben's katoom and restart the lap. Will be doing another soon as found it great fun and a real challenge.

Anyway, back to the cross. Was really looking forward to Fobdown as haven't been there for 4 years. The track was a grass track in the morning but the old Fobdown layout is always good to ride and with the soft dirt the track always cuts up. Practise was a real blast, new Motoz tyres front and rear and flat out on the smooth grass carving some lovely lines.

The qualifier went well but I fluffed the start and so had a battle with Harry Seymour and a few others on the first lap. Chris Wratten was gone so I settled in and took 2nd place checking out the developing lines.

The 2-stroke shootout and Paul grabbed a peach of a holeshot. I slotted in behind him and we had a great battle for a few laps until I barged my way through. I got my head down and pulled a good lead to take the win.

A1 and was really focused on the start. The gate dropped and I was away with a cracking holeshot. Made a mistake on the first lap though as the track had been changed and one of the hairpins cut short so I ran wide and Wratten and Foyle got through. I then had a good battle with Needham until he went down. I then had a lonely race till the flag to take 3rd place which I was really pleased with.

A2 and an OK start, was top 5 into the first corner. Held that for most of the first lap but then got it wrong as I try to make a pass, too hot into the corner, buried the front into a deep soft berm and I was down. Half the pack screamed through as I tried to get going again. From there it was a real stuggle as the track was really cut up and everyone was hauling. Made a few places to finish 17th I think. Not as planned but still scraped 6th overall which was OK. Roll on Matterley!!

Round 7 of the Hampshire Motocross Championships - Whitings Water - 23rd May 2010

The weather was perfect all weekend for Whitings Water and the track looked amazing as usual when we pitched up on Saturday night. Unfortunately, the weekend didn't go to plan with Paul being taken to hospital after a nasty accident left him badly burned. Get well soon mate!

My day started well. Practise was great fun ripping up the track although it was really loose in places with lots of marbles so would only get better as the day went on.

Pulled the holeshot in my qualifier race and had a good race maintaining the lead from a number of challengers in the chasing pack. Held on to take the win and a boost to my confidence.

The 2-stroke race started well as I was in second place behind Paul Moyes with Paul Spacagna screaming his honda behind me. I made the pass for the lead on the first lap and was all set to check out but burried the front end into a deep berm and was down. The clutch lever snapped and so I struggled to get going again. Was tuff without a clutch but started making good progress through the field until I was taken out trying a pass round the outside of another rider. He was on the inside and I decided to rail round the outside but then midcorner he changed line and I had nowhere to go. Down again and lost a lot of time getting going again. Finished with some decent points but not as planned.

A1 and pulled a peach of a holeshot. Not the best launch out of the gate but the RM really hooked up on the straight and I was first into the corner. Rode an awesome first lap and felt comfortable at the front hitting all my lines and berms. Lap 2 and I made a couple of small mistakes and Chris Bick flew past on his 450 honda. He was motoring and soon gapped me. Then David Needham & Chris Wratten came past but Needham crashed a few corners later. Tony Tunnell then got me but he stalled on the next lap and with Wratten retiring with engine problems I was back into second. Needham recovered well though and got past in the last laps so I finished in third which was ok.

The meeting was then cancelled as Fred the flagman was struck by a bike at the end of the A-race and taken to hospital. With the lengthy delay, lack of ambulance and dust problems the meeting was abandoned.

Next meeting is back to Foxholes for round 3 of the UMX series but it is unlikely I will be racing as I have other commitments on this weekend. So it looks like it's back to Fobdown for the next race meeting in July.

Round 6 of the Hampshire Motocross Championships - Foxholes - 16th May 2010

Back to Foxholes for Round 6 and the sun was shining when I arrived on Saturday afternoon with the track perfectly prepared. Things were looking good for racing. Sunday morning and the weather had changed to the usual cold and windy Foxholes that we all know with rain in the air.

Practise was going well and I really liked the changes to the track. Had the lap dialed in on lap 2 but then picked up a front puncture ending my practise session with a very sketchy moment landing the big table top.

Puncture fixed and out for qualifying. The pace was hot but I was running near the front until lap 2 where I lost the front and went down quite heavily. Took a while to get going again but made it into the main.

The 2Stroke race was a real blast. Paul grabbed the holeshot from Freddy Heath with me in third place. We had a race long battle with the three of us separated by a few bike lengths. Mid race I could see Paul starting to pull away and so I made my move past Freddy and set off after Paul. He was riding really well with smooth lines so I had to work hard to catch him. Finally got close enough to make a pass and forced my way through into the lead. He didn't let me have it easily and we battled hard to the end. A good race between 3 RM250 smokers!!

A1 and got a really good start. Thought I had the holeshot but young Jansen Day took the lead. I lost a few places on the first lap and settled into a rythm running in 6th place. My race was fairly static in that I couldn't catch the rider in front and I was staying ahead of the chasing pack until another small mistake and the front end washed out again. Lost 2 places as I picked myself up and finished the race in 8th.

The final race was a nightmare as the heavens opened while we were sitting on the line and the track changed to an ice rink in a matter of minutes. The gate dropped and it was a case of survival from there on. People were falling all over the place and I had a few dodgy moments. Held it together for the first half of the race but then slid off and landed in a huge puddle. Soaked through, grips and gloves covered in mud I got going again and finished the race in about 10th place giving me 7th overall on the day.

Silly mistakes again are costing me points, need to get the consistency back than won me the titles last year!!

Round 2 of the United Motocross Championships (UMX) - Winterpick - 9th May 2010

I have to get the book of excuses out for this one as I had a nightmare of a meeting. Firstly, I am still bunged up with manflu & secondly I am still suffering from the crash at Binstead in that my left shoulder is giving me a lot of grief. With no bike time or training since Binstead and the snotty cold I knew I was going to struggle.

Practise went OK, the track was really slick on the wet grass with hard pack underneath but I got round and really liked the new layout of the track.

Race one and I got an OK jump out of the gate and was running well inside the top 10 on the first lap which was cool. At the end of the lap I took a wide line in the last corner to rail the berm leaving the inside wide open and a rider made a block pass on me. I had nowhere to go as he ploughed into me and then lost balance in the loose berm and was down. By the time I got going I was dead last and not happy. Managed to catch the back of the pack a few laps in and made several passes to work back into the top 15 where I finished. I was really knackered at the end of the race.

Race two and a terrible start meant I was near the back from the off. I had no fight in me and found it difficult to make any passes. As the race progressed on the rough track I got really tired and started to slip backwards. Not a good race and was spent at the end of it.

Decided to throw in the towel at this point as I was feeling pretty ill and totally exhausted. Need to focus this week on getting rid of this shitty cold and start training again ready for Foxholes and the rest of the season!!

Round 5 of the Hampshire Motocross Championships - Binstead - 11th April 2010

A nice weekend for a change and the track was looking OK on Sunday morning apart from the usual hundreds of nails. Must have picked up at least 50 when walking the track on Saturday evening and that was in the first few corners! Was looking forward to a dry race but unfortunately my Sunday was a bit of a disaster.

Practise was OK as the track was well prepared and I survived without getting a puncture. I made a good start in the Qualifier and was running third behind Rob Whiting and Shane Reid until I crashed mid race due to a rear puncture.

A new tube and decided to throw on a new Motoz rear ready for the 2-stroke race. Got some serious grip on the start and nearly flipped it much to my, and many spectators amusement. After my goon start I was dead last and so started working my way through the pack. Had good pace and was closing in on the leaders after a couple of laps but then was way too fast into the jump along the bottom straight and over jumped landing in some really soft stuff. The bike almost came to a stop and I kept on going bailing out over the bars and bouncing down the track. I picked myself up and got going but the bike was twisted and I was hurting. Managed to pull through back into 6th place by the end of the race.

Back in the pits and I had another rear puncture plus my left shoulder, arm and leg had taken a real beating. I got cleaned up by the paramedics but my wrist had that familiar dull ache of a broken bone. Same wrist I broke back in January!

I decided to keep going and so fixed the puncture ready for the first A-Race. Got an OK peg at no.15 and so took a nice gate pick. Got a great start but was 2nd round the first corner. The leader then slipped off in turn 2 and I had the lead. Pushed hard for the opening laps and felt OK but then hit a big braking bump at the end of the fast loop which threw me off line and through the tapes onto the grass. Had to run wide and tiptoe round on the grass while Tony Tunnell blasted through on the inside. Held on for a lap but then Needham was on me as I was starting to fade. Needham got passed and so I settled for 3rd place which I was really happy with.

A2 and I had a crap peg, no.35 so lined up right on the outside gate looking for the fast sweep round the first corner. Got an OK jump and held it flat down the straight hardly letting off as I had such a nice wide line round the first corner. Thought I was gona make it but got T-Boned off the track as the pack pushed wide. Was near the back by the time I got back on the track and had to fight through the dust. It was a tuff race as the track was narrow and the pace was hot so I did what I could. Ended up crashing twice as I was trying too hard. Finished the race in 14th place.

Went to A&E today for an X-Ray on my left wrist and as I thought the crash in the 2-stroke race has broken the wrist again in the same place. The bone has shattered and a piece broken away so it looks like surgery and a few screws to put it back together. Will know more when I see the specialist next week. Gutted!

Round 4 of the Hampshire Motocross Championships - West Meon - 3rd April 2010

Another really wet weekend for West Meon and on arriving at the track I didn't think we would be racing. However, the rain had stopped and so out we went for practise.

The track was really soft and sloppy was actually quite good fun to ride as the mud was so wet and loose so I was able to really throw the RM around. Got totally filled in from Lee Clayton and Mark Withers so headed back to the pits after a couple of laps to clean the bike off ready for the qualifier.

Got a great holeshot in the qualifier which meant I was able to keep my goggles clean and check out at the front. Pulled a huge lead on the first lap and then cruised round to take the win.

Another holeshot in the 2-stroke race and so again was able to see where I was going. Made a small mistake and dropped it in a deep rut mid race but had enough of a gap to pick it up and get going again without losing the lead and raced on to take the win. The track was developing and improving all the time.

Got a good peg for the first A-Race and so lined up pretty much where I wanted to just to the right of the start box. Got a good jump but missed the holeshot and was 4th round the first corner. Moved into 3rd on the first hill and set about the leaders. It was Neil Paddington who had the lead from Tony Tunnell then me. Tony made the pass to take the lead mid way round the first lap. I then followed Neil for half a lap eating his roost and made my move up the first hill. Jumped to the inside at the top but landed on some polished chalk and the front end washed out with no chance of saving it. It took a while to pick myself up and get going on the slippy camber and with it being so early in the race the pack came flying passed. I was really pissed off as I had slipped from 3rd down to about 20th and so the red mist was down and I pushed hard to pass as many riders as I could. Not easy as the track was one line in a lot of places and I got completely filled in by every rider I closed in on. Made it back up to 10th by the chequers but I'd thrown away a load of points.

Race 2 and another good peg and better start. Slotted in behind Tony in 2nd place and battled with him for the first lap. He was riding really good and smooth and started to pull away so I focused on my lines and staying on board. I was maybe a bit too cautious in the closing stages plus was finding the going tough on the 2 stroke and Chris Bick on his 450 Honda caught me and made the pass with 2 laps to go. Finished in 3rd and got 5th overall on the day which was OK but knew that small mistake in race 1 had cost me valuable points.

Round 3 of the Hampshire Motocross Championships - Marshfield - 21st March 2010

Travelled down to Marshfield on Saturday afternoon through heavy rain showers. When we got to the track there were rivers running down the hills and it was almost impossible to walk round. Things weren't looking good! Sunday morning was a different story though as the skies were blue and the sun was shining. The track was still really water logged though but the club organisers decided to go ahead with the meeting.

Practise was tricky as the track was really boggy. Did a couple of laps and then came in to save the clutch and clean the bike off.

Qualifying went really well. Got a good jump out of the gate and pulled the holeshot up the short start straight. Chris Bick was right behind me on the first lap but the track was getting better all the time and I found some new lines and pulled away to take the win.

The 2-stroke race was a similar story. Got the holeshot just in front of Paul. I made a mistake at the end of the first lap over jumping the finish line jump and stalling the bike. Paul closed right in but I managed to get going before he could pass me and I then rode hard and fast to take the win. By this time the track was really developing and drying out in most places so was getting quicker and quicker.

A1 and pulled a crap peg, 35 I think. Lined up next to Paul but went too early and hit the gate really hard. Had to heave the bike back and then go again by which point I was dead last. I rode a crazy race taking loads of risks and making some aggressive but clean passes. On the last lap I closed in on Shane Reid and Dave Alderton. Passed Shane 2 corners from the flag and then barged my way passed Dave in the last corner to grab another position. Checked the results and finished the race in 5th so was really chuffed to have passed 35 riders in the race.

A2 and a much better start. Paul grabbed the holeshot and I slotted in behind him. I then got passed by a few riders and slipped back to 6th place. Fought back in the closing stages to take another 5th place giving me 5th overall on the day.

Round 1 of the United Motocross Championships (UMX) - Swanmore - 7th March 2010

I was a bit nervous going into this meeting as it would be my first race in the Expert class since back in the 80's when I raced the Scottish Nationals and so didn't know what to expect. The last meeting at Swanmore a few weeks previously went perfectly and I always seem to have good pace round the track so was hoping for a good day.

It was another cold day and not much had been done to the track since our last visit so it was going to be rough and slick. Lined up for practise alongside some big names and rode a steady practise trying to find some smooth lines and traction on the chalk surface.

The first race and I took my usual spot for a Swanmore start on the right hand side of the gate. We were held a long time on the 5 second board and I went too early nearly hitting the gate. Grabbed the brakes then went again as the gate finally dropped but not a good jump as there were bikes already stretching out in front of me. I wound the RM on full and held the gas till the last moment, found a gap and squeezed through to exit the first corner in 4th place. The first half of the race was great and I was matching the pace of the leaders, even showing a wheel. But I then started to ride tight and made a few big mistakes which broke my rhythm. In a few corners I had lost 3 places and then another to slip back to 8th . Regrouped and fought back though and made a pass in the closing stages to finish 7th which I was happy with as my goal was a top 10.

The second race and took the same gate. A better launch and rounded the first corner in 3rd place. I was all over the leaders on the first lap and knew I had the pace to lead the race but the tight and technical track was proving tough to pass on. Made a full on attack up the last hill but was too hot and overshot my braking point. Hit the berm hard but the bike had stalled. Got going again quickly but had already lost a load of positions. A rider then dropped his Honda in front of me on the super slick last down hill and I had nowhere to go but into him. This sent me over the bars and by the time I got going I was dead last. The red mist came down & I really pushed to try and catch the pack but was on the brakes too hard a few corners later and went down really hard on my right leg. Decided to give it up and pulled off, my first DNF in a long time.

Race 3 and my leg was in agony but I was determined to give it another go. Got the perfect start this time and the RM ripped up the start straight for me to grab the holeshot . I rode a banzai first lap and as I crossed the line for the first time had a 4 second lead on the chasing pack. This was more like it!! I lead the race for 3 laps but then got hunted down and started to struggle. Slipped back to finish the race in 11th place but was still happy as I knew I had the pace to be in the mix with these guys. Looking forward to the next one!!

Round 2 of the Hampshire Motocross Championships - Swanmore - 14th Feb 2010

After a good solid meeting at Foxholes I was really looking forward to Swanmore as I enjoy the track and always seem to go well there. Another freezing day and we had a bit of everything from snow in the morning to sunshine and then rain making the track very tricky and changeable.

Practise was good fun as the track was well prepared. I wore the helmet cam again and so went out first to avoid any roost. The RM felt perfect as usual and was really hooking up well.

Qualifier was a bit of a challenge as I totally missed the jump out of the gate then had to get on the brakes as a rider came across in front of me. So I was pretty much dead last up the start straight. Rode a couple of banzai laps and was through to third catching the leaders by the chequers so I knew my pace was good for the day.

2-Stroke race went perfectly. Got a good start but it was Ashley Senior on his KTM who had the inside at the first corner and the holehsot. He ran a bit wide in the second corner and I was able to sneak through and take the lead. Controlled the race from there to take the win.

A1 and pulled peg number 1 so lined up exactly where I wanted to. Had another great start but it was Mark Withers on his YZF450 who had the holeshot. I fired up the inside of Mark pushing him wide to take the lead. I soon pulled a good gap but then dropped it in a slow corner and it took a while to get going again which allowed Chris Bick and the rest of the field to close in again. Held on to the lead and raced to the flag to take the win.

A2 and peg number 27. Another good start battling with Mark again for the holeshot. We had a great battle for the first couple of laps. I then got my head down and checked out to take the win.

First overall of the season and really pleased with the bike and fitness. A new challenge at the next meeting as I will be racing in the experts at UMX. Looking forward to it!!

Round 1 of the 2010 Hampshire Motocross Championships - Foxholes - 7th Feb 2010

The start of the season has really come round quick again even though it seems ages since I last raced back in October. I only rode the bike once in the closed season due to the bad weather and ended up breaking my left wrist when I crashed in icy conditions. So with no bike time I was a little anxious leading up to this first event of the year. That all changed though as soon as I arrived at the track and fired up the RM.

Practise was great fun as the track was really sticky and so I threw it round for a few laps. I wore the helmet cam and so didn't want to damage it with the roost so came in after a couple of laps but the bike felt awesome and it was so good to be back on it.

I pulled the holeshot in the qualifier and immediately gapped the field. Then overcooked it in a tight left hander and was down. Chris Bick was on me and went passed as I got back going. I caught and passed him back but then my seat fell off on the step up and so had to ride the last 2 laps on the pegs. Legs were screaming!!

Had another holeshot in the 2-stroke race and lead from start to finish. Was good fun and I had a chance to try some new lines.

The first A-Group race was going to be tough as there were some new (and old) faces. Got a good peg and lined up to the right of the gates. Had a good start but missed the holeshot and nearly stacked it in the second corner. Stayed on and was fifth down the first straight. Soon moved into third behind Garry Chappell. We had a great battle the whole race swapping places nearly every lap. I finally made a clean block pass and was able to hold him off to the flag to finish second behind Jamie Skuse who was long gone.

Race 2 and another good start. Was running in fourth on the first lap and stayed there for the whole race. Couldn't quite catch the guys in front and held off the guy behind.

Really happy with the fourth overall on the day. Can't wait till Swanmore next weekend!

Round 12 of the Hampshire Motocross Championships - Foxholes - 25th October 2009

Was really looking forward to Foxholes as it's a favourite of mine and I knew the pressure would be on with only a slim lead in the main championship. The track was really waterlogged after the heavy rain but the sun was shining & I couldn't wait to get on the track.

I was out in the third practice and the track was really boggy in places. The RM felt really good though and with new Golden Tyres front and rear I was finding loads of grip. At the end of practise there was a long delay as a rider had crashed on the table top. It turned out to be my main championship rival Rupert Heaton who was taken to hospital with a suspected broken ankle. Big shout out to Rupert as we had been battling each other all season and the championship was all set for a nail biting finale at West Meon.

My qualifier heat was perfect as I got the holeshot and so managed to keep the goggles clean on the first lap. From there I checked out and took the win. The bike felt really good and the new tyres were awesome.

I decided not to race the 2 stroke race and lend Roy Poynter my bike as he had a problem with his YZ. Roy returned the favour and let me ride his KXF450 in the vets race which was good fun. First time on a 450 for a long time. Messed up the start and was about 10th on the first lap and got totally filled in. I then started to get to grips with the 450 and came through the field into 3rd place. I could see the leaders ahead but didn't want to risk anything. Enjoyed the 450 but will be sticking with my 2smoker next year.

With an 18 point lead I knew that I just needed 2 good results in the A Group races to take the title. The first race was great as I got another good start and was in 3rd place on the first lap. Pushed passed Shane Reid to take second and then set off after the leader David Needham. I stayed with him but couldn't get close enough to make a pass so finished in 2nd.

A few sums before the last race and a 6th place would be enough to win the title. Made another great start and was 3rd again on the first lap but then dropped it on the third lap and lost 2 places. I held 5th place till the flag and knew then that the title was mine.

Its been the perfect season for me with three out of three titles. The bike has been awesome and a big thanks to everyone who has supported me throughout the year, especially Golden Tyre UK and the misses for putting up with my MX addiction.

Final Round of the United Motocross Championships - Owslebury - 11th October 2009

I've finally done it!! Finally won the UMX Junior Championship after 4 seasons of trying and it feels really good. It's been a tough season with some hard battles along the way but I stayed consistent throughout and lifted the trophy on Sunday.

The track was in perfect condition and was great to ride all day. It's a pity the meeting was cut short in the afternoon due to some accidents as I wanted to have a crack against the Experts in the last race. Practise was great fun, the track was really grippy and the RM was hooking up great everywhere.

The qualifier was a good race. Made a great jump out of the gate and grabbed the holeshot. Then had a great battle with the usual crowd and there was four of us banging bars for a few laps. Really close racing, loved it!! Was running in 4th place and getting destroyed by the roost from the bikes ahead so made a real push and got through to second. Made a dive up the inside to take the lead but the front end washed out and I was down. Picked myself up and finished the race in 5th which was good enough for the A group.

With no peg system in operation I got down to the start nice and early to get a good gate pick. Pulled a monster holeshot and rode a banzai first lap quickly gapping the field but then was a bit too hot down the last hill and the front end washed out again. Kept it running and jumped back on in 3rd right behind the 2nd place rider. From there it was a good close race and I finished in 3rd which was good enough to take the championship.

For the next race I was in no rush and was last down to the start. All the inside gates were taken so I lined up on the very outside on gate 40. Got a cracking start and swept round the outside of everyone to slot into third behind Mark Morris and Dave Ponting. Had a really good race against Shane Reid for most of the laps until I finally made the pass and secured another third place finish.

With the last block of racing being cancelled due to some accidents it was onto the presentation to pick up the trophy and spray the champagne (fizzy wine lol). Tasted good though!!

The new Suzuki has been awesome all season and I hope I can keep it together to finish the perfect season and take the Hampshire Main title as well. All ready won the 2stroke Open Championship so it's 2 down and 1 to go...

Round 11 of the Hampshire Motocross Championships - Swanmore - 4th October 2009

The season is drawing to an end and I am really hungry for my racing now. All week is spent training when I can and thinking about Sunday. Swanmore is a favourite of mine and I went really well there earlier in the season so was looking forward to the meeting.

The track looked OK on Sunday morning as we drove into the pits and there were a few changes to the layout. On having a closer look though it was clear that the track was in very poor condition and was dry and dusty. Not a problem tho, just how I like it.

Practise was good fun and there was already some nice deep berms appearing as the dust got swept out of the holes. Was really rough in places and this was only after a few laps. The bike felt really good as usual.

Qualifying went as planned as I pulled a great holeshot and an early lead. Paul Watts then caught me and made a pass and rather than battle with him for the win I backed off out of his roost and settled for second.

The 2-stroke race was good fun as I pulled another holeshot and then checked out for the win. This allowed me to try some new lines and play around in the deep berms.

After the 2-stroke race I changed the air filter as it was completely clogged with dust and then watched the other races. In the C and B races it was clear that the dust was becoming dangerous and the brick hard, super rough track covered with talcum powder was catching quite a few riders out.

For the first A-Group race I pulled peg 37. Not good and with a full line up I had an outside gate for the start. As the gate dropped I went too early and nearly hit it but managed to jump on the brakes and then wheelie over it. Not a great start tho and the entire pack was on the inside of me heading up to the first corner. There was all kinds of carnage as I arrived with bikes and dust everywhere. Somehow I threaded the needle round the outside and came out of the dust in 5th place. Cool!! Even better as my main rival was caught up in the first turn. By the start of the second lap I was up to 3rd place and challenging for the lead but the red flag then came out after a nasty crash through the bombhole and I headed back to the start. Gutted!! Would have been the perfect result!

The restart never happened as the decision was made to cancel the meeting due to the dust. A good call in my opinion as even with only 2 bikes in front of me I couldn't see a thing going up the hills. Pinned in 4th gear, eyes closed, not good!

Final round of UMX at the great Owslebury track this weekend. Bring it on!!

Round 6 of the United Motocross Championships - West Meon - 27th September 2009

With the season drawing to an end I am really focused on my racing and so couldn't wait to get to West Meon and defend my championship lead. It was good to see Paul back racing so the RSR team was back up to full force.

The track looked as good as West Meon gets on Sunday morning and the weather was perfect. Took it easy in practise as the track was really loose in places and loads of small rocks meant it was a bit treacherous. Still found some good lines and practised a few starts.

Qualifying went as planned. Ripped a great start and rode a steady race to finish second behind Owen Bridgewater who was again flying on his 450 Honda.

The first A-Race and no pegs so it was a scrum to get a good gate pick. Lined up where I wanted and grabbed the all important holeshot. Held off Owen for the first lap but he then squeezed through and slowly pulled away. I couldn't match his pace so concentrated of keeping it smooth and finished 2nd which was good enough.

The second A-Race was a real blast. Got a good jump out of the gate but Luke Wicks, Owen and a Suzuki rider got in front of me. The first few laps were crazy with Aaron Carmichael joining the party so there was 5 of us banging bars for the lead. A few wild moments and a couple of crashes and then it was Carmichael leading with me in second. I stuck with Carmichael and then forced the move to take the lead. Once in front I got my head down and checked out. The win was in the bag but with 2 laps to go the rear tyre punctured and I was all over the place. My 5 second lead was gone on the last lap and Aaron took the win. Bummer!!

A new tube for the last race and got another great start. It was Neil Paddington this time with the holeshot though. Owen came passed us both on the first lap but then crashed and I nearly ran him over. I followed leader Neil for a lap and then made a move but he squared the corner off and blocked my exit. Followed for another half lap and then sneaked up the inside to take the lead. Opened the RM up to the max and soon pulled a gap so controlled the race to take the win and the overall on the day.

Really enjoyed the track and thought it rode well despite the dusty conditions. Swanmore next weekend, a favourite of mine so hopefully no more punctures!!

Round 10 of the Hampshire Motocross Championships - Binstead - 20th September 2009

After an awesome 2day BYMX meeting at Foxhills I was looking forward to getting on the bike again at Binstead. The weeks last too long at the moment and it's all about Sunday!! Track looked as good as Binstead gets on Sunday morning and practise was good fun carving some new lines in the well watered dirt.

Qualifying went well although had a poor start and was midpack on the first lap. Fought though to finish the race in second place and the bike felt as good as ever despite the worn tyre from Foxhills.

I knew the 250 race would be tough for the win with super smooth Kevin Murray lining up on his YZ. The gate dropped and Kev got the holeshot but then went straight through the tapes at turn 2 and I took the lead. I had some good lines and stayed focused to take the win.

A1 and the first start was red flagged after I had grabbed an awesome holeshot and lead the first lap. Bummer!!! Got another good jump at the restart but it was Shane Reid who holeshotted from me, Kev and Rupert Heaton. Kev passed me down the outside and Rupert squeezed through on the inside so we were all set for a good race. We blasted through into the next field as one but I then had a huge moment as my rear tyre blew on the long left hander and I knew my race was done. The tyre was flat by the next corner and the bike was all over the place. From there on it was a case of survival and praying the tyre stayed on the rim and I wasn't destroying my wheel. Was really p**sed off as one by one the A group pack came back passed, Stayed out there and battled with the bike to bring it home in 17th which was damage limitation after a whole race on a flat. Still gutted tho!!!

Got Matt Cox from Eastleigh MX to change my tube and stick on my new Golden Tyre which he did in record time so I was ready for the next one. Totally fired up and wanted to prove a point. Ripped a great holeshot, and really hooked up the first few laps. What a difference a new GT240 makes!!! Lead the race from the gate until the penultimate lap when Kev Murray caught me. Held him off for a lap but he then parked it up the inside of a hairpin and I had no answer. Followed him home to take second place in the race and sixth overall on the day. Not bad considering the bad luck in the first race. Think I'll run a moose if we go back to Binstead!!

Round 9 of the Hampshire Motocross Championships - Whitings Water - 6th September 2009

I have been riding as much as possible during the summer break and was really looking forward to get back racing with Hampshire Club, especially at Whitings Water which is one of my favourite tracks.

Arrived on the Saturday afternoon and walked the track which was absolutely perfect. Couldn't wait to get out there and rip it up!!

Practise was great fun as the track was really nice to ride. Cruised round and then put in a few quick laps and the bike felt perfect after some new parts, a new Golden Tyre and suspension setup by LRS.

For qualifying I took a good gate in the middle and pulled the holeshot. Alan Waring and Harry Seymour then came passed me and I finished the race in third just ahead of Paul Cannon. The bike felt good and I was looking forward to the main races.

Took a similar gate position for the 2stroke open and blasted another holeshot just in front of Alan Waring and Roy Poynter. Alan was all over me for the entire race and was showing me a front wheel at most corners but I rode a smart race and held my lines forcing him to go wide. The battle lasted right to the flag and I was really letting it hang out determined to beat the defending champion. Alan made a last attempt at the pass but I had the inside line on the last corner and held him off for the win.

I pulled peg 24 for the first A-group race but still lined up pretty much where I wanted. The gate dropped and I thought I had the holeshot but Rupert Heaton had the inside line. Carl Milburn then came flying passed up on the pegs and sideways. Awesome!! I got back passed Carl on the first lap and set about passing Rupert. He was riding defensively but I made a pass down the inside of the first hill. Ran a bit deep and he was able to cut inside and block my line on the exit. As Rupert and I were battling hard Alan and Harry managed to squeeze through. I then really attacked and made the pass stick and was able to put a gap between myself and Rupert but Alan and Harry had already stretched a lead. I started to close in on Harry but at the same time Paul Cannon was closing the gap on me so I focused on keeping it smooth and holding my lines to finish the race in third place which I was really happy with.

For the final race I pulled peg number 4 and so lined up exactly where I wanted to. Got another great start but it was Paul Cannon and Shane Reid in front of me through the first couple of turns. I then got hit with arm pump, not even half a lap into it and was struggling on the brakes down the hills. Not hard arm pump all season so not sure where it came from but had a bad couple of laps riding through the cramps and lost some places & slipped down to 5th. Finally recovered and could get back on it but the leaders were already away. Caught up with Brook Alder who was running in 4 th on his KXF450 but I couldn't get close enough to make the pass stick. Finished in 5 th place giving me third overall on the day which was great plus I have extended my championship lead in the main.

Another 2 day meeting this weekend at Foxhills which I'm really looking forward to as I've never ridden the track before and it looks awesome.

Ringwood Motocross Club - Marshfield - 22/23 August 2009

As I couldn't get an entry for the 2 day meeting at Foxhills with Portsmouth Schoolboys I decided to race the 2 day Ringwood meeting at Marshfield. This was a bit of a trek for me and so I left on Friday evening arriving late Friday night ready for the early start on Saturday.

A new club and a new track for me and it was looking good on Saturday morning with some nice weather as well. Decided to race the Vets class over the weekend as there were only a few riders entered in the AMX class.

Had a great weekend on the technical track and the meeting ran really smoothly. Ended up having 7 races as one of the heats on Sunday was re-run due to a balls up. Managed to win all 7 taking the clean sweep which was great. Got pushed all the way on Saturday and had a few battles along the way on Sunday but saw them all off.

Loads of bike time on a new track with a friendly, well run club. Good weekend all round!

Round 5 of the United Motocross Championships - Ringmer - 2nd August 2009

I was still hurting from my crash at Cusses and so had only been out practising once at Popham at the RP Track Day. I was still looking forward to racing at Ringmer as I really like the track layout and great dirt.

We arrived on Saturday afternoon and the weather was perfect. The track looked good although a bit baked and hard packed as the organisers had a problem with the power harrow. It then chucked it down for the rest of the afternoon and most of the night so the track was like soup in the morning however the sun was shining and we were all set for a good days racing.

Practise was a case of slipping and sliding round and trying to stay upright. Good fun and even by the end of practise there were some dry lines appearing.

Qualifying went well and I finished 3rd which was good enough for the main. The track was getting better every lap and the new Golden Tyres were really hooking up on the tacky surface.

Pulled a great start in the first race and grabbed the holeshot as a few riders ran wide into the first turn. Got my head down and pulled a good lead in the opening laps. Owen Bridgewater then closed in on me and eventually got passed on his CRF450 and checked out to take the win. I settled for 2nd place and some good championship points.

Race 2 and an awesome holeshot on the RM250. I lead for the first lap but then got passed by Owen who was flying. Then Neil Paddington got passed me and we had a proper battle to the flag. He was riding very defensively, blocking my every move and running me of the track in places. This gave Harry Seymour and Aaron Carmichael the chance to pass us both. I made a wild attempt on the last lap to make the pass stick but couldn't find a way passed the very wide KXF450 so finished the race 5th.

The final race and I made sure of the start pulling my third holeshot of the day. Pulled a good lead on the opening laps but was then closed in by Harry who was on a charge. He squeezed passed me followed by Owen and I finished the race in 3rd giving me third overall on the day.

A good days racing had and really looking forward to the next meeting at Whitings Water.

BYMX Support - Cusses Gorse - 18th/19th July 2009

Decided to try something different this weekend and the prospect of a 2 day motocross at Cusses really appealed. We got to Cusses on Friday evening and the pits were already full. The track looked well prepared and I knew we were in for a great weekend's racing.

Qualifying on the Saturday morning was a timed session and so rode steady for the first 2 laps until the timed session. I then started on a hot lap but when I came round to finish the lap the pit board showed P28. I was a bit shocked and suprised and so pushed on for another quick lap. Next time round and the pit board looked much better as it read P1. Cool, I backed off for a lap to have a rest and check out the lines and then at the end of the session really went for it again. Made a couple of mistakes though and got caught in traffic to finish the session in third which I was really pleased with. The lap times looked good and I couldn't wait for the first race.

Race1 and got the third pick of the gate which was great as I lined up exactly where I wanted. Got a great jump as the gate dropped and lead the charge up the hill. Got pushed out on the first corner but held on for third down the first hill but that's as far as I got. I ran wide and as I cut back a rider crashed into me on the inside and that's as much as I remember until coming round at the side of the track in a lot of pain. Fortunately, nothing broken and was only out for a few seconds but really battered and bruised plus race over!!

Race2 and I my confidence was definitely shaken. Still managed to pull the holeshot and lead for the first lap but the track was really slick after a few showers and I was struggling to get the power down on the wet hard pack. Came up short on the up hill tripple as the bike was spinning all the way and landed really hard so backed off a bit and slipped down to finish the race in 6th.

Woke up Sunday morning in a load of pain and could hardly move. Went out for practise and the track was really good as it had dried out and I was flying over all the jumps again and so my confidence was better but wasn't sure how long I'd last with the pain.

Race3 and another good start. Was in the mix round the first few bends but then got hit by a rider and forced over the berm and off the track just before the first table top. This cost a load of time and at the end of the first lap I was down in 12th place. I rode a good solid race and picked riders off one by one to make it up into 5th at the start of the last lap. Managed to pass 2 more on the last lap to finish the race in third place which was great but I was really struggling at the end.

With this being a non-championship event I decided to call it a day as there was nothing to gain but everything to loose. Still hurting now and I hope that I'm back to 100% for the next race meeting at Ringmer on the 2nd August.

Round 4 of the United Motocross Championships - Asham Woods - 28th June 2009
Had a great weekend, loved the track as it was really good to ride a technical, demanding natural track for a change. Haven't raced hills like that since back in the day when racing in Scotland.

Practise and Qualifying went really well. Got a good start in the heat. The RSR Suzook had a new Golden Tyre GT240, DEP and VForce fitted last week which certainly helped the launch out of the gate. Was third on the first lap chasing Shane Reid and a young lad (Josh....) on a KTM144 who was flying. Got passed Shane as he stalled it in one of the hairpins and settled for 2nd as Josh was away.

Pulled peg 1 for the first A Race, happy days so got a great gate pick on the inside. Ripped the holeshot and held on round the first hairpin and then got my head down and pushed really hard for the first few laps. Owen Bridgewater was keeping me honest and I could hear his 450 in every corner so knew he was close. A few laps later and the noise behind changed from a thumping 450 to a screaming 2stroke so I guessed Josh was closing in. He forced a pass on me mid race and started to pull away. I regrouped and got my head down and slowly started to reel him back in. Managed to pass him down the big straight as the 250 was able to out pull the 144 but I then made a mistake and screwed up a berm corner and so Josh got back through. We were in the closing stages and I let it all hang out to catch him again. Went for the move up the big hill and Josh missed a gear allowing me to sail passed and hold on for the win. A great battle and really enjoyed the race.

Race 2 and had an OK peg. Got another good start and was third on the first lap behind Josh and Owen. Held onto them for a few laps but then dropped it in a deep berm and they were gone. Rode a steady race from there on and brought it home to finish third.

Final race and another great start. Thought I had the holeshot but Josh parked it up the inside and took the lead. I chased him for the whole race but he was too good this time and I was starting to fade and feel every bump. Held on to finish in second place and got second overall on the day which I was really pleased with.

Round 8 of the Hampshire Motocross Championships - Foxholes - 14th June 2009
This turned out to be a very tough meeting for me. Camped over and walked the track on Saturday evening which was brick hard and still blue groove in places from the previous meeting.

I was really fired up for the racing as hadn't riden since Whitings Water and was a bit too enthusiastic in practise. Ended up binning it on the first lap round the sweeper at the end of the lap that runs next to the start straight. Too much gas flat out in 3rd and the back end broke away then gripped again throwing me straight over the front upside down classic high side. Landed hard on the concrete and immediately thought I'd broken my wrist and collar bone. No broken bones but bloody sore and had destroyed the throttle on the bike. Spent the next hour running around the pits trying to find a replacement. Big thanks to Kevin Murray (94) for lending me the throttle assembly off his spare bike and to Barney Dunford & Lee Clayton for helping getting it sorted.

Managed to get a couple of sighting laps in before the 2-stroke race but my confidence was definitely shaken. Still pulled the holeshot and lead for a bit but Kevin Murray and Alan Warring went passed and I couldn't stay with them. Had a fairly lonely race from there on and so rode round to finish third which was good enough.

A1 and got peg 24 but still lined up pretty much where I wanted. Got a great jump and thought I had the holeshot but got pushed wide in the first corner and then lost a few places. Had some good battles and made my way up to 5th place. Confidence was coming back but I couldn't do the double out of the whoops and so was loosing a load of time on the leaders. Still brought it home 5th which I was happy with.

Final race and pulled the holeshot. Held the lead for half a lap and then started to slip back as I was loosing a couple of seconds every lap in the whoops. Had to really push hard for the rest of the lap to make the time back and maintain my 5th position which was where I finished giving me 5th overall on the day.

All in all not too bad considering the huge off in the morning and still scored some good championship points to maintain the championship lead.

Round 7 of the Hampshire Motocross Championships - Whitings Water - 17th May 2009

Got to Whitings Water on Saturday evening and the track looked awesome. Had a look round and liked the changes that had been put in and the new start layout looked good.

Sunday morning and the rain helped the track if anything. I was out in first practise which was good fun as the track was really deep and loose.

In the qualifier I got an OK jump out of the gate on the wet grass with the new Golden Tyre on the rear hooking up. Paul Cannon got the holeshot and I slotted into second. I stayed with Paul for most of the race but then ran wide on a corner and hit a post really hard head on and nearly went over the bars. Got going and settled for second. Back at the pits and noticed the front pipe was bent but not too bad and no cracks.

The 2stroke shootout was a blast as the track was getting really good with some great lines and awesome berms. Got the holeshot and lead for a while but then Kevin Murray came passed on his Yamaha and gapped me as he had some great wide lines and was riding really smooth. I got my head down and started to catch him but then made another mistake and ran over a berm into the loose stuff and lost a load of time. Race done and second again which was cool.

A1 and pulled peg 29 so not great but lined up pretty much where I wanted on the far left hand side to set me up for a nice sweeping first corner. Got a great jump and pulled a good holeshot. Let it all hang out for the first few laps and then had a look behind to see Paul Cannon and Tony Tunnell right there. Didn't look behind again and just focused on my lines and railing the berms. Held off Tony for the win which was really cool.

A2 and another great start but it was Paul Cannon who got the holeshot. I nearly went down in the first corner on the wet grass but saved it and took off after Paul. Harry Seymour then came flying through and checked out in the lead. I then got passed by Kevin Murray and so was down to 4 th but held onto Paul and Kevin who were having a great battle in front of me. Finished the race in 4 th which was good enough for the overall.

Can't wait to get back to Whitings Water, a proper motocross track!!

Round 3 of the United Motocross Championships - Winterpick Farm - 10th May 2009

UMX Rd3 at Winterpick and I was really looking forward to racing after having a weekend off. Got there on the Saturday afternoon and the track looked great. Very well prepared and the bowser was out for hours watering the track well into Saturday night.

Practise went well. The track was very slick in places as they had watered again in the morning. I struggled a bit on old rubber but found some really good lines so was ready for the races.

Got a good peg for the qualifier and pulled a good start. Was second on the first lap behind Mark Morris who was pushing hard on the slick track. Let it all hang out in the closing stages and passed Mark to take the win.

A1 and I got another great peg. Pulled a huge holeshot and lead the first lap. Shane Reid then came thundering passed and was riding really well. I made a few mistakes trying to stay with him and ended up loosing some time. I was almost settled for second place when I then passed Shane who was picking himself up after washing out on the slick stuff. I refocused and pushed hard to hold off the closing pack to take the win.

A2 and peg 18 but got another monster holeshot. I lead the race from start to finish but it was hard work as Mark Morris and Luke Wicks were only a few bike lengths behind the whole race.

A3 and another holeshot. Got tagged from behind in the second corner but managed to stay on and rode away from the accident behind. Got my head down and really started to put some good laps in but then pushed too hard into a hairpin corner and the front end rolled over the top of the berm and I was down. Jumped back on but three riders had slipped through so I was down to 4 th . Regrouped and soon caught and passed 3 rd place. Then rode really hard in the final laps and closed in on the leaders but ran out of laps and crossed the line in 3 rd to take the overall on the day.

Really pleased with the meeting and hats off to the UMX and organising club as the track was perfect the whole day.

Round 6 of the Hampshire Motocross Championships - Swanmore - 26th April 2009
I'm on a bit of a roll at the moment and was really fired up for the meeting after the previous weekend at Foxholes where I got my first UMX overall win and finally got my expert points. Walked the track and was dissapointed with the "grading" and new "jumps"?? Still, the sun was shining and racing to be had so was looking forward to it.

Practise was terrible, came off three times and the bike felt like I had 2 flat tyres. All over the place with no grip and little confidence. Qualifying was much better. Pulled the holeshot and lead from start to finish. Tried some new lines and the grip was a bit better now all the loose stuff had been pushed aside.

2Stroke race and pulled another holeshot. RM250 2stroke with a Golden Tyre on the rear rules! Had to really work hard in this race as Kevin Murray on his YZ pushed me all the way. He got passed and started to gap me as he was riding really smooth with some great lines. But he then dropped it at the bottom of the big hill and I got through. It was close for the last few laps but I held him off to take the win.

A1 and I pulled peg number 1. Cool, first time I've had a decent peg for ages. Got a good gate pick and blasted another great holehot with Rob Whiting pushing hard round the outside. Lead for the first couple of laps but then Rupert Heaton closed me down. He was all over me and eventually made the pass. I got him back on the same lap as I had a very fast line on the run back up to the finish and passed him over the jump. I rode hard and had to be defensive to keep him behind me but held him off to take my first ever Hampshire A-Group win.

A2 and pulled peg numer 27 which is my birthday so was OK with it. Got an OK gate pick and blasted another perfect holeshot. 4 out of 4. Chris Bick was close on the first corner but closed the door and pushed him wide to maintain the lead. From there it was me and Rupert again. He got passed me early in the race and started to gap me so I got my head down and let it all hang out to catch him and made the pass by stuffing it down the inside on one of the off camber corners. He tried to come back at me but the next lap he had dissapeared so I started to relax a bit. Then noticed that Kevin Murray was closing in fast on his YZ. The last lap flag came out and I rode a messy lap allowing Murray to close right in but held him off at the flag to take the win.

Been riding Hampshire Club since 2003 and finally got the win.

Round 2 of the United Motocross Championships - Foxholes - 19th April 2009

The weather was perfect and the track well prepared again. After the Hampshire meeting there a few weeks ago I was really looking forward to the races.

Got the holeshot in the heat, the RM250 with a new Golden Tyre GT240 on the rear is the one!! Lead the race till the flag and was feeling really good for the main.

A1 and made a good jump again to grab the holeshot but Carmichael came passed as did Reeves on the KTM. Pushed hard and closed in on Carmichael. Side by side over the tabletop and then made the pass on Carmichael the outside of the hairpin. Set off after the leader and was slowly closing the gap. Next lap and jumped into one of the bowl turns to see the leader trying to restart his bike. Sweet! Took the lead and held on for the win.

A2 and grabbed a great holeshot. 2 Strokes Rule!! Lead for most of the race but Reeves was hunting me down and eventually caught me. I held him off for a lap but made a mistake and he got the drive to make the pass. Settled for 2nd and took the overall as the final block was cancelled due to the side car accidents.

Finally got my expert points but will stay Junior for the rest of this season.

Round 5 of the Hampshire Motocross Championships - Binstead - 12th April 2009
Had a great day with my best ever Hampshire result.
Practise went OK, trying to find some lines and not get too covered in crap.

Qualifier was good & finished in 2nd right behind Rupert Heaton. The track was slick in places and rutting up nicely.

2-stroke Race and Paul was a non starter due to a problem with his bike. I made an OK jump out of the gate and managed to grab the holeshot. Got my head down and checked out to take the win.

A1 and pulled peg 35 (again). Having no luck with the pegs at the moment. Lined up on the far outside with a view to get a sweeping line round the outside of the first corner. Pulled the bike right back from the gate to get a rolling start as I was on the grass. Rolled in and dropped the clutch as the gate dropped. Looked across and saw that I was right up there but at the first corner the pack ran wide and I tangled with Paul Cannon. We stayed upright but I was pushed wide off the track and through the tapes. Got back on it was about 7th into the next corner. Had a good solid race and worked my way up to finish 4th which I was really pleased with considering the gate pick.

A2 and pulled peg 24 so got a better gate pick in the middle. Again, I pulled back from the gate to roll the start. I crept up to the gate and got a great jump to grab the all important holeshot. Held the lead for the first lap. Half way round lap 2 Tony Tunnell made a huge leap over one of the jumps to pass me with the bike popping on the limiter in the air. Tucked in behind him but then Harry Seymour, who was flying made a pass. I held onto them but then stalled it in one of the hairpins and Chris Bick closed in. Next lap and passed Seymour who was trying to restart his bike but then I came off and let Bick through. Last few laps and I just held onto 3rd with Lee Clayton pushing hard in the closing stages.

Got 2nd overall which is my best result at Hampshire club. Thought the track was pretty good and the day ran smoothly as usual.

Round 4 of the Hampshire Motocross Championships - Foxholes - 5th April 2009

On a bit of a roll at the moment and wanted to stay consistent at Foxholes. We camped over Saturday night and so had a good look at the track which looked great. Practise was really good fun as it was really loose everywhere. The jumps were awesome, the best I've seen them and I had it nailed on the second lap.

Qualification went well. Pulled an OK start and fought through to 3rd by the end of the first lap behind Paul Cannon and Lee Foyle who was checking out. Battled with Cannon for most of the race and in the closing laps he slowed up with a puncture so I finished 2nd .

2-Stroke race and lined up next to teammate Paul. We both jumped out the gate and were side by side up the start straight. He had the inside line and so I tucked in behind him. Made the pass over the tabletop on the first lap as Paul had a moment and didn't clear it. From there Paul was on my case for a few laps and showing a wheel in most corners. A lap later and he disappeared and so I pressed on to take the win.

A1 and pulled an OK peg and lined up pretty much where I wanted to. Got a great jump and lifted the front wheel over the gate as it dropped. Got the all important holeshot but Foyle was there and passed me in the 2 nd corner. Held onto him for a lap but then over jumped the tabletop and was too fast into the hairpin. Heavy breaking caused the front end to wash out and Tunnell, Heaton, Cannon and Clayton went passed. Rode some great laps to real them in and made a block pass in one of the bowl turns to get Clayton. Then rode hard to close the gap to Cannon and Heaton who were having a great battle. Finally caught them and passed Cannon over the tabletop. Caught Heaton but ran out of laps as couldn't make the pass stick on the last lap. Still finished 4th which was my best A-Group result.

A2 and pulled peg 35 so lined up right on the outside nearest the pits. Got another great jump out of the gate and half way up the start straight looked across to see the whole pack on my inside. Railed it round the outside of the first corner and then parked it into the second corner to come through in about 7 th . Had another great battle with Clayton and finally made the pass but was then stuck behind a KTM for the rest of the race. Finished 5 th which gave me 4 th overall, my best Hampshire result!

Round 3 of the Hampshire Motocross Championships - West Meon - 29th March 2009

After a great result at the first UMX meeting and then the cancelled Foxholes meeting I was really looking forward to racing. The weather was good and the track had been graded so couldn't wait to fire up the Suzuki and get out there.

Practise was good, the track had been watered so was a bit slick in places plus there were no ruts or lines so just rode round and practised a few starts. The peg system was used for qualifying and I pulled number 35 so had a crap gate pick. Still got an Ok start and was top 10 round the first corner. Rode a good first lap and forced my way up into 2nd place but then dropped it at end of the lap in the last corner (again) and so slipped back to about 5th. Battled back through to finish in 2nd.

No pegs for the 2-stroke race so got a better gate pick and pulled a great start with the new Golden Tyre GT240 really hooking up. Thought I had the holeshot but Allen Warring came passed and Paul was showing a wheel up the inside. Rode a good first lap and stayed with Allen and from there we had a good race and battled hard. I made an awesome move mid race and passed Allen round the outside on the brakes and then held him off for a couple of laps but he eventually got back passed me and started to pull away. Finished in 2nd which was great.

Pegs again for the first A-Group race and was really late getting to the line but still pulled peg number 2 from the bag so got my preferred gate. Ripped another great start but Rob Whiting came sweeping round the first corner to take the holeshot. Rode a messy first lap and couldn't match the pace I had in the 2-stroke race as the track had changed a lot and I couldn't find any good lines. Lost a few places in the early laps and then settled in to finish in 6th place.

Pegs again for the last race and got an OK gate pick. Pulled another really good start but missed the holeshot. I followed the leaders up the first hill in 3rd and then got passed by a couple of riders. Rob had a nasty looking crash at the end of the first lap which moved me up to 5th. Another crash on the next lap took Allen Warring and Rupert Heaton out and I was up to third. I rode a couple of laps on my own and then got caught napping by Rupert who came through on the inside. I stayed with him but couldn't close the gap until the final laps when I got the hurry up from Angie as the chasing pack were closing in. Rode an awesome last lap and caught up to Rupert and tried the pass but had left the charge too late. Held on for 4th which equals my best Hampshire finish so really chuffed.

Can't wait till Foxholes!!

Round 1 of the United Motocross Championships - Swanmore - 1st March 2009

Things have been going great with two really good results at the first 2 rounds of the Hampshire championship and so I was really fired up for the round 1 of the UMX series at Swanmore. Walked the track in the morning and it was the same layout as used two weeks previously for HMX but the track was really rough and with the sidecars racing I knew it would be tough by the end of the day.

Practise went well and I just focused on trying to find some new smooth lines. Not many to choose from though! Qualifying is all important and so I really wanted a good start but went too early and hit the gate. Pulled the bike back and got going dead last. Started my way through but in the mid pack chaos of the first lap a rider went down and I had nowhere to go so had to start again from the back. With only four laps to make it the red mist came down and I really pushed, carving my way through taking no prisoners. Made it up to third place by the end which was great

First race in the A-Group and really wanted to make it happen. Pulled a really good start for a change and was top 5 into the first corner. Made a really aggressive move in the second corner charging down the inside and took the lead. Then made a mistake in the third corner and stalled it. One kick and she fired up so only lost 5 or 6 places. Battled hard through to fourth then a rider went down and I was third. The leaders were only a second or 2 in front but I couldn't quite close the gap to challenge them. Finished the race in third which I was really pleased with but again a silly mistake could have cost me the win.

Race 2 and pulled the holeshot. Rode a banzai first couple of laps and built a comfortable lead. From there it was a case of focusing on my lines, staying out of the rough stuff and keeping it together. The guy in second place kept me honest for the whole race and when the last lap flag came out I knew the race was mine. Rode a crap last lap but brought it home to claim that elusive first ever UMX win. Been trying for three years so was really made up at the end.

The final race and I pulled another great start. Was about sixth place on the first lap and picked them off to move up to second. The leader was only a couple of seconds in front and the gap yo-yoed for the whole race. Made a real push with two laps to go and closed right in but then had a big moment and lost all momentum so the chance was gone. Finished in second which was great giving me second overall on the day, my best ever UMX result. Roll on the next meeting!

Round 2 of the Hampshire Motocross Championships - West Meon - 22nd February 2009

After the good result at Swanmore I was really looking forward to some more bike time on the RM. The weather was perfect and the track well graded so a good days racing was on the cards.

Practise was good fun ripping up the smooth track and playing around trying to find some lines. The bike feels so good and does everything I want it to do. I made a few practise starts and thought I was hooking up well. However, made another poor start in the qualifier as was buried in the pack. Soon forced my way towards the front and had a good race to finish in third behind Rob Whiting on his new Kwacker 450 and Paul Spacagna.

The 2-stroke race was great fun. Made a good start banging bars with Paul and Spags. Spaggy took the lead and was letting it all hang out as usual. I stayed with him for a few laps and then started to press him for the lead. We came close a few times and were leaning on each other but I finally forced my way through to the front. From there it was head down to try and pull a gap as Paul was close behind. A few laps latter and I checked over my shoulder to see the 282 of teammate Paul closing in on me. I focused on the last laps and managed to hold him off for the win, my first of the season.

I changed my rear tyre to a new Golden Tyre GT240 during the interval. I was planning to do it in the morning but didn't have time so was now ready for the A-Group races.

The new peg system sorted out the start chaos and I thought it worked well considering it was the first time the system had been used. Lined up in the middle and made an excellent start with the new Golden Tyre launching me out of the gate. Timed it perfectly and lifted the front wheel over the gate as it dropped. Pulled an awesome holeshot and thought I had the lead until Rob Whiting came thundering round the outside leant over like a supermoto rider. I tucked in behind Rob and made the pass for the lead early in the race. From there it was head down and flat out trying to concentrate on my lines rather than the fact that I was in the lead. I held on for about three laps until Chris Lillywhite closed me down. We battled for a lap until he made the pass and checked out. Gary Chappell then came through and I managed to stay with him for most of the race. Rupert Heaton was close on the last lap and I could hear his Honda 450 in every corner. Last corner and I thought I had 3 rd place in the bag but took my eye off the rut I was in and dropped it yards from the flag. Rupert came passed me and took third and I jumped back on to finish in fourth. Was really happy with the race but very disappointed I'd thrown away third place at the end.

The final race of the day and I pulled another perfect start. Had the lead into the first corner but Gary Chappell was there on the inside line. I closed down Gary and tried to make the pass for the lead but had a moment on the slippery chalk at the top of the first hill and Spaggy got through. I held third for a lap until Rupert and Karl Lillywhite came past. I then started to push Spaggy but was too close going into the last corner and pulled too much front brake which sent me down again allowing Rob Whiting to come through. I kept the engine running and jumped back on but the leaders were away. Still finished the race in 6 th place which gave me 5 th overall on the day which equals my best ever Hampshire result but knew I'd thrown away a possible 3 rd overall.

Can't wait till Sunday as we are back to Swanmore for the first round of the UMX championships.

Round 1 of the Hampshire Motocross Championships - Swanmore - 15th February 2009

At last I got to ride the new bike at the first race of the season. Got the new Suzuki RM250 at the end of December and had only ridden it once at a very icy Swanmore practise day so couldn't wait to have a blast on a tacky track. The bike was awesome and I really gelled with it straight away during the practise session. I really liked the new layout at Swanmore and with the twisty sections at the start of the lap knew that the start would be all important come to the races.

The qualifier went really well. Pulled a great start and nearly got the holeshot but Allan Warring slipped past me at the first corner and so I was second. I stuck with Allan for a few laps and the RM was hooking up great but I then made a few mistakes and stalled the bike twice. She fired up first kick so I didn't loose any positions and finished the heat in 2nd which was great.

The next race was the all new 2-stroke shootout which I decided to race rather than the Vets this year. Had another good start but Paul the holeshot king was there on the outside of me and Allan on the inside so I rounded the first corner in 3rd. I forced my way passed Paul and tried to hang on to Allan but he was flying. I finished the race in 2nd with Paul hot on my heals. A quick adjustment on the carb by Mr Warring senior before the race helped with the stalling and improved the throttle response so the bike felt perfect.

The first A-Group race and I lined up in the middle. Totally missed the start and was buried in the pack through the first corners. A rider went down in front of me and as I tried to change line clipped another rider which wiped me out. By the time I got up and going I was dead last with the pack disappearing fast. The red mist came down and I let it all hang out for the entire race taking some risks and having some moments along the way. I made some demon passes and lost count of what position I might be in so when the race finished I thought I might had made it to the top 15. I checked the results and was really surprised to see that I finished in 7th place so was really happy with the race.

The last race was a bit less eventful. Made an OK start and was just outside the top 10 on the first lap. Had some good battles on the tight track and made my way up to finish 7th again. So two 7th place finishes in the main gave me 7th overall.

Really happy with the start to the season with Paul and me getting good results and the new RM feels really good. Just need to sort out my starts. Bring on West Meon next weekend!!

Final Round of the Hampshire Motocross Championships - West Meon - 16th November 2008

The final shootout and championship decider at West Meon was a good day. I had already claimed the Veterans championship so no pressure there and only had to finish both races in the A-Group to claim the clubmans title. However, there was also a top 10 finish in the main up for grabs so I had to decide whether to go all out or play it safe and bring it home.

The track was pretty gnarly as usual and hadn't really been graded so was rough before we began. Practise was OK and I did what I needed to do in the qualifier and get into the main with a 4th place finish. The pace felt OK and an adjustment to the front end seemed to be working as the bike was turning much sharper on the tight corners.

For the Vets race I already had the title in the bag but wanted to go out with another win. Got a cracking start and thought I had the holeshot but Rob Whiting came sweeping round the first corner to take the lead followed by Dave Ponting on his mighty CR500. I ate Dave's roost for a lap and then made the pass. Rob had already made a gap and so I focused on my lines and clawed my way back up to Rob. Made the pass late in the race and held on the for win.

The start of the first A-Group race saw me on the most outside gate due to the chaos when lining up for the start. Think a peg system is needed for next season!! Made another flyer and thought I had the holeshot but the race had been red flagged as some riders had hit and destroyed the gate. So we lined up again for a flag start. Made a good jump and was running in third for the first lap. Slipped back a bit as didn't want to take too many risks and brought it home in 10th for some good points in the main.

Final race and another flag start. Got mugged in the first corner this time and so had to fight through. Made some great passes as the bike was turning really well. Fought my way up to about 16th which was good enough to take the Clubmans title and finish 8th overall in the main.

It's been a long, tough season and I'm really pleased to take two championships this year. After the disaster last year and my knee surgery I didn't think I'd be as competitive but consistency has bought me the titles. Big thanks to Dean Caplin who let me ride his 450 after my gearbox broke at Whitings Water. Wouldn't have won without that!! Apart from that the YZ 2smoker hasn't missed a beat and I'll be riding the screamer again next season.

Finally, big thanks to all our sponsors for their continued support throughout the season and big shout out to Paul who has had a torrid season with niggling injuries. Bring on 2009!! See you at the races :)
